Jonathan Ryan began as an observational painter, depicting confounding architecture and landscapes, and then gradually shifted toward imagined forms. His background in observational painting provides him with the foundation to use light and shadow in ways that give depth to his geometric, abstract forms. Ryan’s current work continues to be influenced by industrial structures and archaic architecture. He has an ongoing investment in color, materiality, and Modernist form in painting.
Ryan has a BFA from Louisiana State University and an MFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University. He attended the Vermont Studio Center residency in 2012. He has been represented by the Landing in Los Angeles since 2018 and will have his second solo show at the gallery in 2021. Ryan’s work has also been exhibited in Los Angeles at the Brand Library, Jacob’s West, Gallery ALSO, Tiger Strikes Asteroid and Elevator Mondays, as well as exhibitions at Field Project in New York and the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia. Ryan was born in Buffalo, New York and currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
